Teachers resign after put on alert 7:14 AM

Nearly a dozen teachers have resigned from West Charlotte High School after being told they had to shape up or be fired. Those teachers are among 71 at four schools that Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Superintendent Peter Gorman says are in danger of losing their jobs if they don't improve by the end of the year.
Wednesday night the principal at West Charlotte confirmed 11 of his teachers didn't wait to be fired and walked off the job. Parents are worried about their child's education.
“It does leave us in a bind. You want the best education for your child,” said Monica Graham whose daughter is a sophomore at West Charlotte. She said the school is becoming a revolving door for teachers.
“One day she'll go in her math teacher, science teacher or English teacher is there. (The) next day they're not,” Graham said.
Dr. John Modest agrees with the goals of the High School Challenge, which is an effort to improve the four lowest performing high schools in the county.
“It provides us an opportunity to try to raise the level of instruction by removing and dismissing teachers who aren't doing their job so I agree with it,” he said.
Stacey Clark, a West Charlotte English teacher who is not in danger of losing her job said, “I think we're going to lose some good teachers. That is the nature of the beast.”
“When it gets too hard and you look at your paycheck you think why? I can go and double the paycheck and decrease by half the stress.”
The principal admits, the process has morale down at his school, and parents say that’s among students as well.
Graham said, “It's hard to build morale and a system with your child when there is so much uncertainty.”
