6NEWS Police said these four teens are responsible for at least 66 cases of vandalism in southwest Charlotte.
Four teens stand accused of vandalizing a neighborhood. Police said the vandals targeted the Steele Creek neighborhood in southwest Charlotte.
They used BB guns to damage hundreds of car windows, police said. The shootings started in January and escalated to 150 cars in one February weekend.
“I think the whole neighborhood felt like it was under siege,” said neighbor Lisa Walker. “This was mischievous, this was deviant and they took the security away.”
Walker’s Huntington Farms neighborhood was so shaken, it organized 24 hour a day citizen patrols.
Word came Wednesday that police had finally cracked the case.
“(We put in) probably more man hours in any singular case that we've ever worked in this district,” said Officer Travis Pardue.
After three months of investigation police charged Daniel Massetti, Charles Hancock, Chad Moustafa and Anthony Murphy with at least 66 of the shootings.
Three of the four are former students at Olympic High School.
“One would be driving and one or two would be shooting,” Pardue said.
Some of the vandalism sprees were planned on MySpace.com police said. Officers said as the shootings escalated, the teens started talking and the tips started coming in.
“They said they did this out of boredom. (There was) no other reason given,” Pardue said.
Walker now has a reason to be happy. She hopes the arrests put an end to the shootings that shattered her car window and her sense of well-being.
“I like to sit on the front porch with my son in the evenings and rock him. That's something I look forward to and they took that away from me. They took it away from everyone else,” Walker said.
Police said the tips they received on the case came from people in the community.
Police said the parents of the teens didn’t know what their sons were doing. Police have not said if any of them will spend time in jail.
However, Daniel Massetti is already serving time in South Carolina for allegedly shooting out some windows there.
