Driver of deadly hit-and-run found and charged

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The driver of a fatal hit-and-run accident has been arrested and charged.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say a dark colored SUV was stopped at a stop sign on Michigan Avenue, trying to turn left on Eastway Drive in east Charlotte Thursday night when it turned directly into Nga Nguyen, who was driving a moped that was traveling down Eastway Drive.

According to police, the SUV stopped then immediately reversed back onto Michigan Avenue and fled.

First responders were called to the scene around 10:45 p.m. Thursday. Police say Nguyen was killed due to the injuries she sustained from the accident.

While on scene, investigators were able to locate the SUV on the 600 block of Camrose Drive.

The driver, identified by police as Lecostia Patterson, was screened for impairment and arrested for driving while impaired and transported to the hospital to have blood drawn.

Upon release, Patterson was charged with felony death by motor vehicle and felony hit-and=run. Patterson is in the custody of Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.

This is an ongoing investigation. CMPD asks anyone who witnessed the crash or has information to contact Detective Oberer at 704-432-2169 or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
