Man arrested after deadly southeast Charlotte accident

A busy road, finally back open, almost five hours after a deadly crash shut it down.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The driver of a car has been arrested after police say he caused a four-car accident that killed one person in southeast Charlotte Thursday afternoon.

It happened around 5 p.m. at the intersection of Monroe Road and Orchard Lake Drive.

"A tangle up of cars," says Larry Bumgardner, who lives in the area.

"Terrible, especially when someone loses their life. I feel for that person," says Anthony Mason, who lives near the crash site.

The multi-car crash shut down Monroe Road for hours, causing traffic to back up in the surrounding area.

According to police, William Graham Jr. was trying to turn left onto Monroe Road when he turned directly into the path of oncoming cars causing a four-car crash.

The driver of a 2012 Toyota Corolla, Barbara Dennis, 71, was killed in the accident, according to police.  She was not wearing a seatbelt, according to investigators.

Graham was treated and released from the hospital.  Graham has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

People who live near Monroe Road say it's always busy.

"Because they've got too many entrances going on to Monroe Road from businesses, apartment complexes and that type of thing," says Bumgardner.

"When you're exiting, early in the morning or even like traffic time, it's really hard to get out," says Mason.

CMPD says four people were taken to the hospital.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
