13-year-old airlifted to hospital after accident with cement truck

In Cabarrus County, four people are recovering after a cement truck turned over onto their van, three of which are teens.

CABARRUS COUNTY, N.C. -- In Cabarrus County, four people are recovering after a cement truck turned over onto their van.

Highway Patrol says just before 8:30 a.m. Wednesday morning a Honda Odessey minivan was facing west in the left-hand turn lane of Zion Church Road, when a concrete truck traveling north on NC-49, “attempted to make a right turn onto Zion Church Road with too much speed. As a result, that concrete motor vehicle overturned on top of the Honda Odessey van that was stopped,” said Highway Patrol Master Trooper Ned Moultrie.

Four people were inside the van, including an adult driver near 44 years old and three young teenage girls.

First responders say they were able to get two of the girls out of the van immediately. Officials say they were transported to CMC North East by ambulance.

But the driver and passenger directly behind the driver in the back seat were both pinned beneath the cement truck, estimated to weigh more than 30,000 pounds.

“There was a crane close by, Superior Crane, and they came on scene and was able to lift that vehicle up,” said Master Trooper Moultrie.

Crews worked for more than an hour to rescue the two trapped inside. Once freed, officials say they were each flown via helicopter to Carolina’s Medical Center.

Officials have not yet released the condition of the passengers inside the van.

NBC Charlotte has learned however, that the driver of the cement truck was cited for ‘exceeding a safe speed.’

The driver works for a Blue Dot Readi-Mix, a company based in Mint Hill, N.C. The company has yet to return comment.

Part of Zion Church Road was closed for several hours Wednesday morning as crews worked to tow the cement truck and clean up oil and hydrolic fluid that had leaked during the crash.
