CMPD: 70-year-old dies after being hit crossing street

A pedestrian was hit and killed while trying to cross a busy south Charlotte road, police say.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Detectives with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police are investigating after a pedestrian was struck and killed in south Charlotte Thursday.

According to CMPD, officers responded to a reported crash involving a pedestrian in the 700 block of South Sharon Amity Road near Providence Road a little after 1:30 p.m. When officers arrived at the scene, the victim, identified as 70-year-old Barbara Ann Sutton, was lying in the road.

Police say that Sutton was taken to CMC-Main where she died as a result of her injuries.

Investigators say that a 2007 Mercedes-Benz station wagon was traveling southbound on South Sharon Amity when the Sutton darted across the roadway from the driver’s right-hand side. Police say the driver struck Sutton, who was not crossing in a crosswalk, and stopped immediately and contacted police.

Detectives say that speed and alcohol are not contributing factors in the crash.
