Crash knocks out power for hundreds in university area

A crash in northeast Charlotte knocked out power for hundreds of Duke Energy customers Sunday evening.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A busy University City roadway is shut down while crews work to restore power after a crash knocked down several power lines Sunday.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police responded to a crash on West Mallard Creek Church Road between North Tryon Street and I-85 around 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Police say that a vehicle drove off the right side of the roadway and hit a utility pole.

Duke Energy crews say they’re hopeful to have power restored to over 300 customers by 1:30 p.m. Monday.

Police say the driver of the vehicle involved was taken to Novant Health and treated for minor injuries. Investigators have not said if any charges will be filed in connection with the crash.
