A passenger was killed after a log smashed through the window of a pickup truck Tuesday morning in Caldwell County.

CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. -- A passenger was killed after a log smashed through the window of a pickup truck Tuesday morning in Caldwell County.

Lenoir Police responded to a call of a traffic accident a little before 7:45 a.m. near Wilkesboro Boulevard and Taylorsville Road Southeast in Lenoir. Upon arrival, officers found 15-year-old Wesley Oliver inside a Ford F-150 pickup truck that was struck by log that had crashed through the windshield.

Oliver was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Lenoir Police.

Following investigations, police determined a logging truck was turning right onto Taylorsville Road. As the Ford pickup truck, driven by Oliver's father, was preparing to go through the intersection, a log extended from the back of the logging truck and struck the Ford pickup truck.

According to witnesses, the log crashed through the Ford pickup truck's window on the passenger's side.

Witnesses told NBC Charlotte Oliver was a student at Hibriten High School and his father was driving him to school at the time of the deadly crash.

Students remembered Oliver fondly.

"He was probably one of the nicest people you'll ever meet," said one of his classmates at Hibriten High.

North Carolina Highway Patrol and Lenoir Police are investigating the crash. As of Tuesday afternoon, criminal charges have not been filed against either driver.
