ROCK HILL, S.C. -- One person was killed and five people were transported to the hospital following a police chase that ended in a horrific crash.
Rock Hill Police say the driver of the car, Stevie McClinton, tried fleeing on foot, but officers were able to take him down before he got away.
According to the Rock Hill Police, "after a short foot pursuit (McClinton) was caught by the investigator where he began to actively resist and punch the officer. Several civilians came to the assistance of the officer and helped him get Mr. McClinton into custody."
The scene unfolded on the corner of Heckle Boulevard and Crawford Road in Rock Hill.
"I just heard a loud crash," said Robert Rhodes, a witness. "It sounded like it was coming through the house almost."
Rhodes says he's lucky. The police pursuit ended right at his doorstep. He saw the aftermath.
"Guy hopped out of the car then started running and cops chased him on foot then tackled him in the grass," said Rhodes.
Police say a routine traffic stop took a dangerous turn when the driver didn't obey the law, causing a three-car pile-up which hurt half a dozen people.
"All you heard was 'errrrr' and a big bang noise," said Isaiah Crews, a witness. "Guy that was in that old car right there, he got out and was on top of the roof for a little bit then got off and then tried to run."
According to authorities, McClinton who led law enforcement on a car chase also led officers on a foot chase shortly after.
"Then they tackled him, apprehended him, then had guns drawn on another suspect in the car," said Rhodes.
The Rock Hill Police Department released a statement Thursday saying investigators have information that he was possibly selling drugs and firearms out of his vehicle. "He was also considered to be armed and dangerous."
Officials say three cars were involved and 1 person was killed and five people were injured, one of whom had to be extricated from the vehicle.
The York County Coroner's Office identified the deceased as 72-year-old Virginia Bartell.
According to the RHPD, Wednesday's accident was also McClinton's twenty-third birthday.
McClinton is charged with trafficking MDMA/Ecstasy, three counts of possession of marijuana, possession of a stolen handgun, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
McClinton's bond was denied in court on Thursday.
