CMPD volunteer struck by vehicle after crash in south Charlotte

Authorities are searching for the suspect driver of the hit-and-run crash involving a CMPD vounteer.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police are investigating after a volunteer citizen on patrol officer was struck by a vehicle while directing traffic in south Charlotte Monday afternoon. 

According to CMPD, officers responded to a crash at the intersection of Park Road and Hillside Avenue around 5 p.m. The road was shut down for at least four hours while crews work to replace a power pole that was knocked down during the crash, police said. 

A CMPD Citizens On Patrol volunteer also responded to the scene to assist with directing traffic. The volunteer was driving a marked vehicle with emergency lights and was also wearing a reflective vest when a white four-door sedan struck him before driving away from the scene. 

Investigators said the volunteer suffered serious injuries in the collision. The volunteer, who has yet to be identified, was taken to Carolinas Medical Center.
