Pedestrian killed in accident in southeast Charlotte

CMPD is investigating after a pedestrian was killed in southeast Charlotte Tuesday night.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police are investigating a fatal accident in southeast Charlotte Tuesday night.

According to CMPD, officers responded to a crash involving a pedestrian at the intersection of Sardis Road North and Krefeld Drive. When police arrived, they saw a 2015 Dodge Journey with front-end damage and a man lying in the roadway. The pedestrian, 50-year-old Dwayne Selman, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said Selman was attempting to cross Sardis Road North when he stopped directly in the path of the Dodge Journey. Police said Selman was crossing against the signal and not inside a crosswalk. Alcohol appears to be a contributing factor, according to police.

The driver of the Dodge Journey was screened for impairment, which was not detected.
