Winning numbers drawn in 'Powerball' game

This is the second big winner in Tennessee.

The first was a $1.6 billion jackpot that three ticket holders shared Jan. 13. A family in Munford, Tenn., received $528.8 million as its share of the largest lottery jackpot ever.

Three of the 10 largest Powerball prize payouts and one of the largest MegaMillions pots have happened this year, according to the Multi-State Lottery Association, an affiliation of the lotteries that sell Powerball and MegaMillions tickets. The District of Columbia, Puerto Rico the U.S. Virgin Islands and 44 states offer the Powerball game, in which players choose the first five numbers from a set of 69 white balls and the Powerball from a pool of 26 red balls.NASHVILLE — A lottery player who bought a ticket in Lafayette, Tenn., won Saturday night's $420.9 million grand prize, according to the Tennessee Lottery.

The winning ticket was sold in Lafayette, a city of about 5,000 residents that is 60 miles northeast of Nashville. It matched all six Powerball numbers drawn Saturday night, the Tennessee Lottery said in a news release.

Three different players also matched all five white numbers drawn to win $1 million. Those winning tickets were sold in Minnesota, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.

The winning numbers: 17-19-21-37-44, Powerball: 16, Power Play: 2. The Lafayette ticket is also the 200th ticket sold by the Tennessee Lottery worth $1 million or more.

The ticket holder has not yet come forward to claim the prize, which ranks 12th among all U.S. lottery prizes and is the ninth largest Powerball prize. The Tennessee Lottery advises the winner to sign the back of the ticket and keep it in a secure location.

The winner has 180 days from the date of the drawing, about six months, to claim the jackpot and decide whether to take the grand prize in 30 annual payments that increase over time or in one lump sum, which is always substantially less but will be more than the $243.8 million calculated for what was expected to be a $403 million prize. The jackpot jumped with higher-than-anticipated ticket sales.

The odds of getting the grand prize are more than 1 in 292 million.

The other big Powerball winner this year, from a $487 million Powerball ticket sold in New Hampshire for the July 30 drawing, also has not come forward.
