KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — Jamaican authorities say a U.S. citizen was one of two people killed during a shooting that erupted when police confronted gunmen who were trying to rob a business in a coastal town in western Jamaica. A third person was wounded.

The Jamaica Observer says the American man was hit in the crossfire between police and robbers Saturday evening in Savanna-La-Mar, the main town in the western parish of Westmoreland. It's not a community frequented by tourists.

Authorities say a fugitive identified only by the nickname "Bigga" also was shot and killed.

According to police, a 9-mm pistol was seized from the man identified as Bigga, who they characterize as one of the parish's most wanted men. They say he was wanted for crimes including murder, rape and armed robbery.

An investigation is under way.

The U.S. Embassy says the American citizen's next of kin have been informed of his death.
