COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — President Mahinda Rajapaksa has sworn in veteran politician Dissanayake Mudiyansalage Jayaratne as Sri Lanka's new prime minister after his party's landslide election victory.

Jayaratne, 74 has been in politics for nearly 50 years and has overseen several key ministries.

He will play a limited role under Rajapaksa, but Jayaratne will be head of government in Parliament.

According to final election results released early Wednesday, Rajapaksa's United People's Freedom Alliance won 144 seats in a 225-member Parliament but fell short of the two-thirds majority it sought to make constitutional changes.
