In the Northlake are of Mecklenburg County, there’s a 140 acre park that offers everything from disc golf to horseshoes to basketball to fishing-- but there’s a lot more at Hornet’s Nest Park!
A world class BMX track is right there in the park and open to all ages. Hornet’s Nest BMX has been in operation for over 30 years and is affiliated with the American Bicycle Association(ABA).
This past weekend, there was a major competition at the track: The Tar Heel Nationals. Some of the top BMX racers in the world were there to participate at the top BMX track in North Carolina.
The group included Australian Sam Willoughby, who has won every major event in BMX racing, except the Gold Medal. He won silver in the London Olympics and will be competing in the 2016 Games.
Monday morning on Larry’s Look, we got the full tour of the track from Mark Coates, long-time director.
He talked about the history of the sport and the track, which is open to all ages. Mark says he’s seen riders as young as two years-old take a spin.
Speaking of kids, Larry even went off the ramp---on a very interesting BMX bike!
