CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- With Veteran’s Day a few days away, our Larry’s Look segment took a step back in time. Between 1917 and 1918, Charlotte was home to over 65,000 soldiers.
They were recruits who got their training for combat in World War I -- at Camp Greene. It was a 6,000 acre base, located in the Wilkinson Boulevard area of the Queen City.
The house that became the camp’s headquarters and is still standing. Local filmmaker Jack Dillard produced a documentary about the base, “City of Canvas: The Story of Camp Greene."
Jack was our guest this morning and had a great perspective on this part of Charlotte’s history.
In honor of Veteran’s Day, you can see the film this Sunday at 3pm at the Duke Mansion on Hermitage Road. For free reservations, call 704-714 4445.
