CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- United Family Services' Shelter for Battered Women sponsors a holiday store every year for families who have used their services.

The stores are filled with new toys and gifts donated to people in the community. Children shop for their mothers and mothers shop for the kids. Shelter workers say it's a great way for them to celebrate their new life and the hard work they've put into providing for their families.

"It's a wonderful thing," said Jane Taylor, coordinator of Shelter Services. "This may be the first time a child gets to pick out something he thinks his mom would like."

This year their donations are down and they are hoping the public will step up and help. This year's store celebration is this weekend. They're hoping to help 200 women and children.

If you want to help, they are collecting donations Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at Trinity Episcopal School at 740 E. 9th Street from 1-6 p.m. If you need more information, call 704-332-2513. They have also posted a list of wish list items on their web site. They also welcome donations of wrapping paper, tape and bows.
