A Charlotte native, Sonja joined WCNC-TV as anchor in October 1997. She is a broadcast veteran, bringing with her over a dozen years of experience and background in reporting health issues.
Sonja is the lead anchor for the hour-long 4 p.m. newscast and co-anchors the 6 p.m. with Dave Wagner.
Previously, Sonja was the co-anchor of Chicago superstation WGN's morning news and the station's medical reporter. She joined WGN in 1993 as a weekend anchor and general assignment reporter.
Before heading to the "Windy City," Sonja was the health reporter for WBTV in Charlotte where she received the Heart and Torch Media Award from the American Heart Association in recognition of her reporting. Sonja launched her career as a general assignment reporter for WBTW-TV in Florence, SC.
Sonja earned a degree in journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is the daughter of former Charlotte Mayor Harvey Gantt. Sonja and her husband, Mitch, have two children and reside in Charlotte.
