Recycling has become an important part of our daily lives, but did you ever wonder where those bottles, cans, and old newspapers go---after they’re picked-up at your curbside?

This morning on Larry’s Look, we got the answers when Larry visited Iredell Recycling (Benfield Sanitation Services) off Mazeppa Road in Mooresville, North Carolina. The 30,000 square foot center was built last year.

Once recycling trucks arrive with their load, everything is dumped in a large pile and pushed into a bin where a conveyor belt carries it upward for pre-sorting.

During that process, workers look for contaminants that cannot go through the system -- such as cardboard with wax coating, pizza boxes due to food containments, and hard-back plastics like toys and laundry baskets.

Larry even joined-in to help, but found-out quickly that it’s a very exacting process.
