CHARLOTTE, N.C. --New Charlotte-Mecklenburg officers joined the ranks of the police department Friday.

Men and women are part of the department's 161st recruiting class.  Friday the recruits received their badges and were sworn in a morning ceremony.

Former marine and class president, Scottie Carson, shared with NewsChannel 36 the reason he decided to join the CMPD department.

"I was involved in the funeral for Officer Helton, It was an obvious choice…" said Carson.

There were 44 recruits total in this class.
