for language

September 19, 2006

By NANCY CHURNIN / The Dallas Morning News

Stick It
C- Starring Missy Peregrym, Jeff Bridges, Vanessa Lengies, Tarah Paige, Kellan Lutz and John Patrick Amedori. Directed by Jessica Bendinger. PG-13 (language). 103 mins. plus extras. $29.99.

GYM TIME: When 17-year-old Haley Graham (Missy Peregrym) smashes her dirt bike into a house under construction, she complains bitterly about a sentence that other gymnasts would kill for: training at the elite Vickerman Gymnastics Academy in Houston from a charismatic but washed-up pro (Jeff Bridges).

SASSY MISSY: Part of the problem is Haley's attitude, which gets old pretty quick. You lose patience with this bad-girl star long before you find out why she has that big chip on her shoulder. Oh yeah, and the payoff — when she leads the girls in a protest against the judges by refusing to compete — falls kind of flat.

Kaltenbach Pictures
From left: Maddy Curley, Nikki Soohoo, Vanessa Lengies and Missy Peregrym star in "Stick It."

SLIM GYM: The best part is the gymnastics, particularly the voice-overs where Haley talks about the pain of mastering seemingly impossible moves. From the thudding falls to the ice-cube baths, it points to the craziness of the sport and the beauty, too.

BEST EXTRA: Routines by some of the world's best gymnasts in the extra "The Elites."

BOTTOM LINE: We're still waiting for a great Chorus Line -like gymnastics movie that focuses on a rich variety of real people stories.
