Senators press France, Germany, others for more Iraq help

Associated Press

WASHINGTON, D.C. — France and Germany are rebuffing calls for more troops and help in Iraq.

Three U.S. senators traveling in Iraq made the rounds on the Sunday talk shows, calling on NATO and the two countries to send more soldiers and relieve Iraq's crushing debt.

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist told Fox News, "It's really time that they do step up."

A government spokesman says the German chancellor "has said clearly that we will send no soldiers to Iraq." Germany trains Iraqi police officers in the United Arab Emirates.

The French foreign ministry says there is no change in its position on NATO involvement. French President Jacques Chirac has said any request for NATO help must come from a sovereign Iraqi government.

The U.S. and its allies went to war despite the objections of both countries.
