CONCORD, N.C. - 2011 NHRA Champion Matt Hagan's thrill ride turned into a close call back in April at the Z-Max Dragway.
Hagan was traveling at over 300 miles per hour down the track when his funny car burst into flames and disintegrated around him without anyone warning. Hagan walked away from the crash unscathed. It was caused when a spring on the intake valve broke, allowing the intake valve to drop and tag an engine piston, igniting the fuel in the car.
Hagan returns to Z-Max Dragway this weekend for the O'Reilly Autoparts NHRA Nationals. The event is the first postseason race on series. The NHRA Nationals start Friday, September 14th and run through Sunday.
