CONCORD, N.C. -- Two people were treated Saturday after a car exploded and flew into the air.
The incident happened at the zMax dragway during the (National Hot Rod Association) NHRA nationals.
Speedway officials said, “Robert Hight’s Ford Mustang suffered an engine explosion near the finish line during the second round of ‘Funny Car’ qualifying.”
According to officials, the engine explosion blew the carbon fiber body off the chassis and sent it flying into the air.
Parts from the body of the car went over the grand stand and into unsuspecting fans.
Officials said as a precaution two fans were evaluated and released by paramedics.
Shortly after the explosion the race resumed.
