CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- There have already been several firsts for the Charlotte 49ers football program, but Thursday morning marked another first: the first meaningful fall practice.

The 49ers hit the field for about two hours, working toward their first ever football game. It was like Christmas all over again for the players and coaches.

Junior safety Desmond Cooper could hardly contain his excitement.

"We're looking forward to another opponent," Cooper said. "We don't have to worry about beating up on each other anymore." He added, "Right now we're putting on all of our new stuff and stepping out on the field again, so it's a good thing to do."

Charlotte Head Coach Brad Lambert was also pumped about the first fall practice with game implications.

Lambert said, "We wanted to get out here early and get them started, get in that mode. Most of our games are around noon."

"We want to build on what we've done, as far as establishing how we play and how we come to the field every day. We want to show up every day with the right attitude and effort, and we've done that so far. And this is the first day for the month of August going into the season."

The 49ers kick off their new era of college football at Richardson Stadium Saturday, August 31, when they host Campbell, coached by former Panther Mike Minter.
