CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte's bid to host the Action Sport Olympics needs a boost from the community as the XGames decision nears.
Charlotte was named one of the four cities in the running for a three-year contract to host the North American summer leg of the XGames global tour beginning in 2014. The Queen City is going up against Austin, Chicago and Detroit.
Charlotte Motor Speedway submitted the bid. Experts have complimented the CMS complex as one of the top venues in the finalist cities.
Charlotte has lagged behind other cities in its social media presence and community participation. Detroit has made a major push online for the games.
"It would, for me, be a dream come true for the XGames to be in Charlotte," said Chuck Powell, a long time skateboarder and action sports enthusiast, Friday at Black Sheep Skate Shop in SouthEnd. Powell started a Change.org petition to prove the region wants the XGames in Charlotte.
There are XGames Bid Charlotte Facebook and Twitter accounts, in addition to the official Web site.
ESPN XGames location scouts are due in Charlotte June 4 and 5. Supporters of the Charlotte bid are encouraging people to go all out leading up to the visit.
The new host city is expected to be announced this summer.
