KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- A Charlotte swimmer broke three American records Friday at the 2013 AT&T Winter National Championships.

Nick Thoman, a current Charlotte resident from Cincinnati, broke the 50 yard and 100 yard backstroke records.

Thoman was also part of the SwimMan Carolina men’s relay team that broke the country’s record in the 4x50 medley relay. Cullen Jones, another Olympian who calls Charlotte home, was part of the relay team too, along with swimmers Eric Knight and Time Phillips.

The previous American record for the 100 yard race was set at 44.55 by Olympic gold medalist Matt Grevers. Thoman battles Grevers in the swim tonight. Both of them beat the previous record, but Thoman finished first at 44.07.
