MOORESVILLE, N.C. - The balance of power in the 4A/3A North Piedmont Conference may have shifted in Mooresville's favor Friday night. The Devils took down conference rival South Iredell 33-10 at a packed Joe Popp Stadium.
Mooresville came out and got that high powered offense of theirs going in the first quarter, as Akease Rankin rumbled 76 yards for the first score of the game and a 7-0 Devils advantage. Rankin added another 9 yard run in the first, before South Iredell finally answered. Alex Crosby hit De'Andre Rankin for 10 yards, cutting the Mooresville lead to 10-7. The Blue Devils tallied two more scores to take a 17 point advantage at half.
South Iredell trailed 24-7 in the third, when they turned it over again in the red zone. This time Christopher Ingram came away with a big interception of Cosby, ending the Vikings drive.
Rankin added his third score of the game later in the third, putting the game out of reach and moving the Blue Devils a step closer to a conference championship.
"We are going to try our hardest and give it our all next week against Lake Norman," Rankin said afterwards. Mooresville head coach Hal Capps added, "I love the way we are playing heading into the final week of the season, but we still got one more to go."
Mooresville improves to 9-1 on the season and will host Lake Norman in the regular season finale next week. South Iredell, 8-2, hosts Statesville in their regular season finale one week from tonight.
