(Durham, NC) – Durham starter Matt Buschmann (6-1, 2.95) allowed just one hit over six innings as the Durham Bulls beat the Charlotte Knights 5-2 on Saturday in game two of their three-game series from Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Buschmann struck-out seven batters on the night as well.
The Bulls scored three runs in the third inning off Charlotte starter Nick McCully (2-2, 6.00) to take a 3-0 lead. Leslie Anderson drove home the first two runs with a two-run, two-out single in the inning. Shelley Duncan followed with an RBI single to give the Bulls a three-run lead.
Three innings later, the Bulls tacked on one more run when Duncan scored on a Jesus Flores groundout. With the Bulls ahead by a score of 4-0, the Knights began their comeback.
Durham reliever Brandon Gomes replaced Buschmann to begin the seventh inning and ran into early trouble. Gomes hit Mike McDade with a pitch and two batters later, he allowed a two-run home run to Tyler Greene. The Knights cut the lead in half, 4-2 thanks to Greene's third home run of the season.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Evan Frey scored on a fielding error by Charlotte shortstop Marcus Semien to make it a 5-2 game.
McCully allowed three runs (all unearned) on seven hits over five innings and was charged with the loss. Relievers Santos Rodriguez (one inning) and Daniel Webb (1.2 innings) also allowed an unearned run each. All of Durham’s runs on the night were unearned. The Knights committed a total of three errors.
Durham reliever Kirby Yates closed the door in the ninth for his 16th save of the season. Three Durham pitchers combined to allow just three Charlotte hits on the evening.
The two teams will conclude their series on Sunday at 5:05 p.m. from Durham Bulls Athletic Park. RHP Zach Stewart (5-13, 5.02) will get the start for the Knights against Durham RHP J.D. Martin (14-4, 2.84).
