FORT MILL, S.C. -- The Charlotte Knights had a chance to win their second-straight game over the Norfolk Tides on Thursday. With two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth inning, Josh Phegley struck-out to end the game to give the Tides a 2-0 win over Charlotte in game three of the four-game series from Knights Stadium.
Norfolk starter Zach Clark (1-2, 4.56), who was a late addition to Thursday's game, allowed just four hits over seven shutout innings for the victory. Clark was not the originally scheduled starter for Thursday’s game. LHP Zach Britton was set to start, but was promoted to the Baltimore Orioles before the contest. That gave way to Clark, who made his best start of the season.
Clark struck-out seven Knights batters and allowed just one walk for the win. Three relievers combined to work the final two innings to seal the win for Norfolk. Jairo Asencio recorded the final three outs to earn his sixth save of the year.
L.J. Hoes led the way offensively for Norfolk. Hoes went 2-4 with a double and two RBIs. Norfolk had a combined six hits on the evening – one less than Charlotte’s seven.
Charlotte right fielder Jim Gallagher went 3-3 to lead the Knights at the plate.
RHP Zach Stewart (0-3, 4.55) started for Charlotte and was the hard-luck loser. Stewart allowed two runs on four hits over seven innings and was saddled with the loss. Relievers Daniel Moskos and Deunte Heath each chipped in with a scoreless inning out of the bullpen.
The two teams will conclude their four-game series on Friday at Knights Stadium. RHP Andre Rienzo will get the start for the Knights, while RHP Jake Arrieta will start for Norfolk. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. and first pitch is set for 7:15 p.m.
