CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- In probably the most hyped high school football game in quite some time in Charlotte, the Mallard Creek Mavericks got a little bit of payback with a narrow win over Butler Friday night.
The Mavericks, who lost to Vance deep in the playoffs last year, edged the two-time defending 4AA champion Bulldogs 28-20 on their home turf. Mallard Creek would have played Butler in the state semifinals last year, but were upset in the quarterfinals by Vance.
Both sides of the stadium were packed, and media outlets from across the state converged on MCHS.
The Bulldogs had won 31 straight games, but dropped their first game of the season and their first with new head coach Brian Hales.
It wasn't the only long losing streak to come to an end on week one. West Rowan High School saw its 46-game winning streak end thanks to Mooresville's 21-14 upset. West Rowan had the longest streak in the country until Friday night.
