PITTSBURGH, P.A. - The Carolina Panthers saw their two game preseason winning streak come to an end at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, as the Steelers beat them 17-16.

Several Panthers starters, including quarterback Cam Newton never saw the field. Back up quarterback  Derrick Anderson started under center and completed 8 of his 18 pass attempts for 91 yards and no touchdowns as the Panthers went into half trailing 10-3. The special teams was burned twice on their punt coverage by Chris Rainey. The Steelers running back returned two first quarter punts for touchdowns, only to have both called back on Pittsburgh penalties.

Jimmy Clausen played most of the second half and played pretty well. Clausen completed 9 of his 19 pass attempts for 173 yards and two touchdowns, including a 79 yard strike to Lamont Bryant late in the fourth quarter. Justin Medlock missed two late field goals, including a 50 yarder that would have won the game for the Panthers.

Several guys were making their final cases for a roster spot, just ahead of Friday's deadline to trim NFL Rosters to 53. Both running back Armond Smith and Tauren Poole faired well. Smith rushed for 85 yards on 16 carries. Poole carried the ball 7 times for 30 yards. Wide Receiver Armanti Edwards, also believed to be on the bubble, caught 2 passes for 32 yards.

Carolina opens the regular season on Sunday, September 9th at Tampa. Kickoff is set for 4:15pm.
