MOOSIC, PA – Corey Patterson and JR Murphy hit back-to-back home runs in the seventh inning and the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders beat the Charlotte Knights 7-1 on Tuesday in the opening game of their four-game series from PNC Field in Moosic, PA. The RailRiders improved to 5-0 against the Knights this season.
The RailRiders had 11 hits on the night and received a solid pitching performance from starter Caleb Cotham (5-5, 5.63), who allowed just one run over five innings. Three relievers combined to hold the Knights scoreless over the final four innings. Same Demel recorded the final five outs to earn his third save of the season.
RHP Erik Johnson (2-1, 1.93) was saddled with his first Triple-A loss after he allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits over six innings. Johnson struck-out seven batters. It was his first loss since May 13 when he was a member of the Double-A Birmingham Barons.
Patterson led the way offensively for the RailRiders. He finished the game 3-for-5 with two runs scored, the home run, and one RBI. His home run came in the seventh inning off Charlotte reliever Simon Castro. Castro allowed four runs on five hits over just one inning of work. Murphy was 2-for-3 with the home run and two RBIs.
For the Knights, Steve Tolleson had two of the team’s six hits. Marcus Semien went 1-for-3 with a run scored, a walk, and a stolen base.
The two teams will continue their series on Wednesday with game two of the series. RHP Jason Berken (10-11, 4.04) will get the start for the Knights, while RHP Chris Bootcheck (9-6, 3.90) will get the start for the RailRiders. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
