HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley sees all the values she's looking to promote in her state's golf courses, tennis courts, race tracks and sports stadiums.
Haley says events like last week's Family Circle Cup women's tennis tournament and this week's RBC Heritage golf tournament are essential drivers for the state's economic engine and part of what makes the state appealing to businesses seeking investments or residents looking for vacation homes.
The governor says that's why she would not let the RBC Heritage disappear last year when the cash-strapped PGA Tour event needed a title sponsor to move forward. Haley and other national, state and local politicians helped bring RBC and Boeing Co. in to back the Heritage for five years.
