DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Former Davidson basketball star Stephen Curry played his first official NBA game Wednesday night. The rookie tallied 14 points, seven assists and four steals as the Golden State Warriors opened up their 2009-10 season with a 108-107 loss to the Houston Rockets.
Curry is fulfilling a dream he's had since he was little when he watched his father Dell Curry play in the NBA.
After practice Tuesday, Stephen Curry talked about adjusting to life as a Golden State Warrior.
"Coach Nelson is more relaxed in practice. Coach McKillop is a yeller,” Curry said.
Curry now has new teammates and competitors with height and athleticism on a different level.
“You know you get past your defender and then you've got a seven foot guy trying to block your shot. You've got to figure out how to get around him," Curry said.
There's more attention for Curry off the court.
"A lot of different things with the media, appearances and all that stuff so it's a whirlwind and I'm just trying to get used to it," he said.
He's enjoying the new scenery with trips to San Francisco and now that he's earning a paycheck of millions, he’s purchases a few things. The biggest purchase is a new car.
"It's a Mercedes G55 G wagon. So it's a big, you know, box truck. One of those Army ones. I tell everybody that the Pope drives it so that's why I think it's cool," Curry said.
Life is exciting as an NBA rookie, but he still hasn't forgotten his past. He recently sent 2,000 postcards to all of those in the Davidson and Charlotte area that have supported his career so far.
"I've heard back from a lot of them and they put it up on their refrigerators and stuff like that so it's kind of cool," Curry said.
He says he's North Carolinian through and through, not yet ready to call himself a West Coast guy.
"I got a little homesick about a week or two ago when Davidson started practicing. Everybody was calling me and letting me know how it was going so that was the first time I felt a little homesick,” Curry said.
But that feeling is gone. He's just too busy now that the season has started.
His mom was in the stands for the first game and his dad was with the Bobcats.
