Durham, N.C. - UNC Junior guard PJ Hairston and two other men are facing criminal charges after all three were arrested Wednesday night at a license checkpoint in Durham.
Hairston was driving a rental SUV and was charged with driving without a license and possession of 1.5 ounces of marijuana. All three have since been released on $1,000 dollars bond.
Friday, the news got worse for the Carolina basketball star. Several media outlets, including a Raleigh TV station, CBS Sports.com and ESPN reported that authorities also found a loaded 9 mm hand gun outside of Hairston's car. They believe one of the three men tossed it out the window just before they reached the license checkpoint, but are still investigating who owns the weapon.
School officials say they are aware of the incident involving Hairston, but are holding off on issuing a statement until all the facts are gathered. It's not clear how this incident impacts Hairston's status with the team heading into the 2013-2014 season. Hairston averaged nearly 15 points a game for the Tar Heels in 2012-2013.
