GASTONIA, N.C. -- Never heard of the Gastonia Grizzlies? By now, you probably have. The college baseball summer league team is making headlines for several reasons.
The Grizzlies are currently in first place in the Coastal Plain League and this team definitely knows how to dress for success. Gastonia recently made national news for their choice of uniforms, tuxedo jerseys.
"We were told it got over 48 million views in a 24-hour period," said Grizzlies Managing Partner Jesse Cole. Jesse was referring to the Grizzlies new tuxedo uniform, a concept thought up by event director Alex McDonald. "The game is going to happen, so we wanted to put on a good show so that we can have another form of entertainment," said McDonald.
The response for the new uniforms has been huge. They've been featured by the likes of NESN, SB Nation, the Sporting News and Bleacher Report. While some of the reviews have been mixed, several of the current players really enjoy their stylish new duds.
"I wore a throwback jersey a couple years ago and this overshoots that by a lot," said outfielder Thomas Bess.
Catcher Anthony Dimino plays his college ball just up the road at Division II Belmont Abbey College and hopes the uniforms will attract big league scouts to some of the Grizzlies games.
"Obviously we aren't getting that kind of exposure at Belmont Abbey so it's a lot different," said Dimino.
The Grizzlies play host to Florence tomorrow night at Sims Park.
