BUFFALO, NY -– After a hiccup in his first start of the season with the Knights, Simon Castro has been nearly untouchable. On Friday, Castro continued that dominance.
Castro (1-1, 2.70) tossed five scoreless innings, Dallas McPherson and Hector Gimenez each hit solo home runs, and the Charlotte Knights shutout the Buffalo Bisons 4-0 on Friday in the opening game of the four-game series from Coca-Cola Field in Buffalo, NY.
Making just his fourth start of the season with the Knights, Castro extended his scoreless innings streak to 15 on Friday in the opener. He allowed just one hit on the night en route to his first win of the season with Charlotte.
After posting a 6-3 mark with a 3.60 ERA in 13 starts for Double-A Birmingham, Castro was promoted to the Knights on June 22. In his Knights debut the next day, he allowed seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits over five innings. Since then, however, Castro has been unscored upon.
With Friday’s impressive outing, Castro has now allowed just 10 hits over 15 shutout innings with 12 strikeouts over that span.
McPherson continued his second-half surge with a solo home run in the fourth inning off Buffalo starter Colin McHugh (1-3, 4.54). McPherson went 1-3 with the home run, his ninth of the season. Gimenez also homered off McHugh for his 13th of the year.
Relievers Shane Lindsay and Anthony Carter each chipped in with two shutout innings apiece. Carter earned his second save of the season.
With the win and a Norfolk loss, the first place Knights (57-44) are now six games ahead of the Tides in the International League South Division.
The two teams will play game two on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. LHP Charlie Leesman is scheduled to start for Charlotte. The Bisons will hand the ball to UNC product RHP Matt Harvey.
