FORT MILL, S.C. -- The Knights scored early and often in the nightcap to avoid a two-game series sweep at the hands of the Gwinnett Braves on Thursday.
Drew Garcia went 3-3 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBIs, and the Charlotte Knights beat the Gwinnett Braves 8-0 on Thursday in the finale of the two-game series from Knights Stadium. The win for Charlotte snapped a season-high four-game losing streak.
Earlier in the day, the Knights lost Tuesday’s suspended game by a score of 4-3. That loss was the club’s fourth-straight to Gwinnett.
In the originally scheduled matchup, LHP Scott Olsen started and did not allow a run over two innings. He walked one, gave up one hit, and struck-out two batters.
Reliever Brandon Kloess (1-0, 2.70) was superb for Charlotte over three shutout frames to earn the victory. Kloess allowed three hits and two walks to notch his first Knights win of the season. Anthony Carter recorded the final six outs for the Knights.
The Knights pounded out 11 hits en-route to their first win in the month of July. Garcia’s three hits and home run paced the offense. Tyler Kuhn also chipped in with two hits and two runs scored. Conor Jackson and Hector Gimenez had two hits apiece.
Charlotte (49-40) will now host the Norfolk Tides on Friday for a three-game series. Friday’s game is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. from Knights Stadium. Gates are set to open at 6:00 p.m. and the first 1,000 kids 12 and under will receive a Dayan Viciedo bobblehead, courtesy of Tyson Any’tizers.
