FORT MILL, S.C. -- The Syracuse Chiefs took game one of a doubleheader from the Charlotte Knights 3-2 Wednesday night at Knights Stadium. Left-handed starter Zach Duke (15-5, 3.51) pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed two runs to get the victory.
Syracuse took the lead in the fifth inning with two runs on four hits. Sandy Leon singled home Mark Teahen and Jesus Valdez drove in Carlos Rivero with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.
Charlotte catcher Josh Phegley cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning with his fifth home run and his fourth in August.
The Chiefs built the lead back up in the following inning when Eury Perez singled, stole second, and scored on a Teahen base hit to right-centerfield to make it 3-1.
Brent Morel doubled to the right-centerfield gap in the home sixth to score Greg Golson all the way from first base and make the score 3-2 Chiefs. Golson was 2-for-3 for the game. Carlos Sanchez was 2-for-3 as well for Charlotte.
Matt Zaleski (6-6, 3.77) started for the Knights and pitched a seven-inning complete game to get the hard-luck loss. He went seven innings, allowed three runs, and struck out four.
Former-Knight Alejandro De Aza was on a rehab from the Chicago White Sox, and he started at Designated Hitter and led off for Charlotte. He was 1-for-4 on the night.
