NORFOLK, VA – The Charlotte Knights rebounded from their worst four-game start to a season ever with an impressive showing at the plate on Monday.
Jim Gallagher went 4-6 with a home run and four RBIs, Matt Zaleski threw six shutout innings, and the Charlotte Knights earned their first win of the 2013 season with a 21-4 romping of the Norfolk Tides in game one of the three-game series from Harbor Park in Norfolk, VA. The win was the club’s first of the early season, which improved their record to 1-4 on the year.
Six of the nine Knights hitters had multi-hit games, with five of the six having at least three hits in the contest. Gallagher’s four hits and four RBI’s paced the offense, which ripped a total of 20 hits on the evening. After scoring a total of 11 runs over their first four games of the season, the Knights offense broke-out in a big way.
Charlotte catcher Josh Phegley homered in the ninth inning and has now hit safely in all four games he’s appeared in this season. 20-year-old short stop Carlos Sanchez chipped in with three hits, three RBIs and three runs scored. Tyler Greene also had a memorable day at the plate. Greene had three hits, four runs scored, and two RBIs.
While everything clicked on the offensive side of things, Charlotte’s starting pitcher was brilliant. Zaleski, who entered his fifth season with the Knights on Monday, struck-out eight batters while walking just one. The 31-year-old right-handed pitcher now has 19 wins in a Knights uniform.
RHP Jason Berken, a former Norfolk Tides pitcher, is scheduled to start for the Knights on Tuesday in the middle game of the series. Berken, a product of Clemson University, will make his first start of the year.
The Charlotte Knights will wrap up the three game series on Wednesday and then return home to play their home opener on Thursday, April 11 in a 7:15 p.m. game against the Gwinnett Braves. The game will mark the opening of Knights Stadium for its 24th and final season in Fort Mill, SC. Tickets for all 72 home games are available for purchase. The Knights will welcome Country Music Recording Artist and Eight-Time Women's Wrestling Champion Mickie James to Knights Stadium on Friday, April 12.
