COLUMBUS, OH -- After seven attempts this year, Zach Stewart notched his first win of the 2013 season on Wednesday. He did it with the help of his battery mate.
Stewart (1-4, 4.22) allowed just one run over six innings, Josh Phegley hit a two-run home run, and the Charlotte Knights beat the Columbus Clippers 8-3 on Wednesday in game three of their four-game series from Huntington Park in Columbus, Ohio. The red-hot Knights have now won five of seven games on the road trip.
Phegley is in the midst of a career year. The Indiana native hit six home runs in all of 2012 and with his home run on Wednesday he has already surpassed that number this season. Phegley’s two-run home run, his team-high seventh of the season, came in the top of the third inning off Columbus starter T.J. House (0-2, 7.88), who was saddled with the loss. The 25-year-old catcher went 2-4 with the home run and three RBIs. He now has three home runs on the current road trip and five of his seven long balls this season have come in road games.
Stewart was sharp on the hill for the Knights. He fanned a season-high seven batters and earned his first win since he beat the Knights as a member of the Pawtucket Red Sox in the Governors’ Cup Championship on September 12, 2012. It was his first regular season win since August 6, 2012 when he beat the Lehigh Valley IronPigs with five scoreless innings.
Brent Morel and Carlos Sanchez each had solid days at the plate for Charlotte. Morel had two hits, two runs scored, two RBIs and two walks. Sanchez, the number-three prospect in the White Sox organization as ranked by Baseball America, had three hits, one run scored and one RBI. He tripled in the ninth inning and later scored on Morel’s RBI single.
White Sox outfielder Dayan Viciedo made his third Major League rehab appearance with the Knights on Wednesday and recorded his first hit. Viciedo went 1-4 with a walk.
The two teams will conclude their series on Thursday with first pitch scheduled for 11:35 a.m. RHP Andre Rienzo will make the start for the Knights in the finale. After the game, the Knights will return home to open an eight-game homestand on Friday, May 10. The upcoming homestand features the 8th Annual Pink Knights game on Saturday, May 11 and a special Mother's Day celebration on Sunday, May 12.
