CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Comments from the NBA’s newest owner are creating a buzz around the Queen City.
During a press conference officially announcing him as the New Orleans Hornets owner, Tom Benson said he would like to change the team’s name to something that embodies the city of New Orleans.
For many Bobcats fans, that statement meant the name “Hornets” could be back on the market.
The Charlotte team’s management has not commented on the possibility of a name change, but that hasn’t stopped people from hoping.
There appeared to be nearly as many people in Charlotte Hornets gear as there were in Bobcats apparel at Monday’s home game against New Orleans.
“Bring back our history, our name and our team,” said one fan.
Some are skeptical Bobcats owner Michael Jordan would spend the millions of dollars it could take to re-brand the team.
Others, though, think the move would pay off in the long run.
“I think more people would buy tickets,” said John Morgan, a supporter of the name change. “I don’t just think it’s a possibility anymore. I think it’s going to happen now that the Hornets name could be available.”
