Cam Newton on Denver hits: 'It's a contact sport'

Eugene Robinson on Cam Newton hits

CHARLOTTE - Despite two Broncos being fined for their hits on Cam Newton last Thursday, the Panthers quarterback doesn't seem too concerned.

"It's a contact sport," Newton said multiple times on Wednesday.

Denver safety Darian Stewart was fined $18,231, and linebacker Brandon Marshall was levied a $24,309 fine.

In total, there were four hits to Newton's head on Thursday, and only one penalty was called.

"On the referees' side, I can't worry about that," Newton said. "They have a job to do. Everybody's got a job to do."

Because of Newton's ability to run, and escape sacks in the pocket, he tends to be open to major hits.

He was asked if he's worried about his long-term health. Newton never wavered.

"I'm worried about winning," Newton said. "I'm not here to worry about retirement plans, to worry about pensions, to worry about worker's comp. I'm here to win football games. Simple and plain. This is a contact sport."

The Carolina Panthers host the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday at 1 p.m.
