Cam Newton to miss Tampa Bay game

CHARLOTTE - Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton will miss Monday's game against Tampa Bay, the team announced Sunday.

"We're going to do what we do and play who we play. We've done this before. We've been through this and I expect our guys to come out and play and play with energy and play to their abilities," Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said.

He added that Newton has been progressing through the protocols and is antsy to get back on the field.

It's unknown if Newton will be on the sidelines against the Bucs, but Rivera added he would like to have him out there if Newton is healthy enough.

With Newton out, Derek Anderson will start for the Panthers. Anderson beat the Bucs twice in 2014.

"I think our guys just have a lot of confidence in who he is. We think he's a guy who fits into what we do, he understands it," Rivera said.

Running back Jonathan Stewart (hamstring), cornerback James Bradberry (toe) and offensive tackle Michael Oher (concussion) are the other starters that will miss Monday's game.  Defensive tackle Vernon Butler (ankle) will also miss Monday's game.

"We have a lot of faith in the guys who are replacing the guys who aren't playing and that's just the nature of what we do. It's that next man up mentality," Rivera said.

With Bradberry out this week and the Panthers releasing Bene Benwikere on Friday, Carolina will have two new starters at cornerback: Daryl Worley and Robert McClain.

"We have a lot of confidence in what we've got, we really do. These are guys that are showing progress and have stepped up. We'll see though- you never know until you play," Rivera said.

The Panthers also have Thomas Davis, Charles Johnson and Mike Tolbert listed as questionable.
