COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- New South Carolina basketball coach Frank Martin discovered this week how much Gamecock basketball fans want success when Columbia's mayor proclaimed it "Frank Martin Day" in the state's capital city.
Martin is anxious to give fans some victories to cheer about. He has been going non-stop whirl since leaving Kansas State to come and try to revive the Gamecocks last March. Martin has gotten to know his current players, found recruits to fill out a depleted roster and made contacts necessary to get his program known to the high-quality players necessary to compete in the Southeastern Conference.
Martin's immersed himself into the community.
He was honored by the Chamber of Commerce where Mayor Steve Benjamin named Wednesday in Martin's honor. Martin was also keynote speaker at a community lunch.
