ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) -- New Winthrop coach Pat Kelsey knows exactly how many NCAA tournament banners hang in the team's coliseum. And he knows he is expected to add a few more.

The school introduced the 36-year-old former Xavier and Wake Forest assistant Thursday.

Kelsey took last season off from college basketball to deal with lingering issues from the 2007 death of his mentor, Demon Deacons coach Skip Prosser. But he says he missed the sport immediately and is ready to return.

Winthrop has been to nine NCAA tournaments since 1999 in the one-bid Big South Conference, but missed the last two tournaments with losing records, forcing the firing of coach Randy Peele.

Kelsey counted off Winthrop's nine banners Thursday and says it is his responsibility to take the program to another level.
