COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina's board of trustees has approved adding the sport of sand volleyball to the athletic department.
Athletic director Ray Tanner said Thursday the sport would begin play in 2014 and indoor women's volleyball assistant Moritz Moritz would take over as the new team's first coach. The board also approved construction of a playing facility in the school's athletic village located on campus.
Sand volleyball is the 12th women's sport in South Carolina's program. It is the first Southeastern Conference school to add the sport.
