CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- UNC Charlotte officials will review the latest plans for the university's new football stadium on Friday.
The stadium design includes 14,000 seats, but it can be expanded to include 40,000 seats.
The stadium will cost about $40 million to build and it's scheduled to open in fall 2013.
Part of the funding is coming from 49er seat licenses. So far, more than 2,300 are sold for the new stadium.
Those involved with the program and creation of the football team and the new stadium say it will make UNCC a more complete university.
"Any university that would eventually grow to 35,000 students in the largest metropolitan area of this state needed to be a complete university," said Chancellor Philip DuBois.
During the meeting Friday, the UNCC Board of Trustees will review the latest stadium renderings and submit possible changes.
The 49ers are scheduled to play their first home game on August 31, 2013, against Campbell University.
