CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Cox Mill boys basketball team won its first ever state championship Saturday night at the Dean Smith Center.

Sophomore Wendell Moore Jr. led the way with 29 points to earn game MVP honors. The Chargers beat Eastern Guilford 70-66 in the 3A state final.

Earlier in the afternoon Lincoln Charter also won its first ever state championship in 1A. The Eagles beat Kestrel Heights 97-75. Kody Shubert was named MVP.

The Hickory Ridge girls fell a bucket short in the 3A final against Northern Guilford. The Lady Bulls lost 66-64, despite leading by eight at the half.

Hickory Ridge eventually trailed by nine inside two minutes to go, but cut the deficit to two with 20 seconds left. The Bulls were unable finish off the rally, and Northern Guilford won the championship one year after losing in the same game.

Northern Guilford was led by N.C. State commit Elissa Cunane. She had 24 points, 10 rebounds, and nine blocks in the win.
